QuickTip 1 : Krita user interface, working values

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 2, 2013, 3:39 AM

For black and white artworks or when you need to spend long time working on the values in your process , you 'll probably appreciate this Krita tips ...

Specific Color Selector

- Add the docker 'Specific Color Selector'  ( Top menu : Settings > Docker > Specific Color Selector )
- Check the box 'Show Colorspace Selector'
- Turn the model to 'Grayscale'
- Uncheck the 'Show Colorspace Selector'
- Resize the box to have a long width
... Now you have a wider range of selection for selecting precisely a value

Light pollution around

- To dim down all the polluting back-light of your display around artwork and help you to focus on your artwork, a good idea to change Krita for a darker theme.
Top menu : Setting > Theme >  ...then choose.
I tend to work more in the 'Krita-blender' theme, or as on the screenshot above  'Krita-darker'
Note : Gnome / Xfce / Unity users may have a bad rendering. Install kde-style-oxygen package , and setup it with qt4-qtconfig to solve

- Also, you can dim the value of the color 'around the canvas' in Krita
Top menu : Settings > Configure Krita -> ( display icon on the left column ) -> Canvas border :  'Color'
Depending the mood, I use or a dark value here ( 50 ) or a mid one ( 128 ) , but rarely above

Keyboard shortcut

You can press at any moment while painting this two mnemonic shortcuts
K for 10% darKer value
L for 10% Lighter value
Also, as a reminder : I for less opacIty,  and O for more Opaque are just above , and M for Mirroring view ...

Save your workspace

Krita can save 'workspace'  witch mean you can save mukltiple dockers positions depending your activities, or workflow
Toolbar : Last icon -> Insert a name -> Save
ex : here I have my trusty 'Black-White_1200x1600' workspace ready to launch for my screen.

Hi,
I encountered 3 problem while starting with Krita.
1. Applying or modifying any filter from the dropdown menu uses too much of cpu that it gets slow. CPU: Core2Duo.
2. Files>new> imports the last screenshot that the 'shutter' app took. It's so weird, I cant even guess the connection between Shutter and Krita.
3.Edit>resources> gives a straight floating line instead of an option or drop down menu.

Any Idea how to fix these?

So anything alternative of this? I mean how the colour mixing is being done now? Just from selecting from the wheel?

Yes, only the wheel or using a corner of the canvas I guess as a painting surface.
The brush engine ' Color Smudge' with the 'dulling' mode can do similar color blending.

and one more thing. I saw in few videos about krita painting...there is a docker or something..it looks like a circular colour selector but with a palette around it... can you tell me how can I find that one?

Very interesting, I haven't tried Krita yet, but I planned to do so and this will be helpful. The keyboard shortcuts are especially useful IMO :)

If I may ask, I've got a question not totally related to this article, but still regarding Krita and value study. With Gimp when I do a black and white study, I'll generally use several layer mode to paintover the colours next (such as overlay, multiply or colour). Well, I don't do this quite often since I'm not good with achieving colours that way.

How did you colour your artwork after this greyscale painting ? Are there the same kind of layer modes in Krita than in Gimp ? Do you have any tips regarding turning greyscale to colour ?

Eventually, I feel like you're using Krita quite often recently, compared to Gimp. In your opinion, what makes it more comfortable for you, what is it better for ? :)

Sorry for bothering you with all my questions x_x

Je viens juste de remarquer qu'en fait, tu étais français comme moi, je me sens un peu bête d'avoir écrit tout ça en anglais. Si tu veux répondre en Français du coup hein... :p
