What's this ? by Deevad What's this ? by Deevad
I did a *lot* of graphic test ( for a comic project ) since June and posted none of them. Here above is one of the rare attempt where I had a colored and finished result , simulating a random frame with random character design and scene.
I'll continue test : I have so much things to learn.

Lineart : Mypaint (dev)
Coloring : Krita (dev)

As a new artist learning Krita and well-versed in GIMP, what's your reasoning in using Mypaint for your lineart? I'm unsatisfied with Krita's line, path, and vector options but love its paint engine, and am looking for a better open-source program for initial sketching and lineart. Great work by the way!

hey, thx! this one was posted in august 2012 ; and 2 years ago Krita didn't had the half of good features as now. In the next version 2.9 line quality and stabiliser will be really improved.
I used Mypaint on this one because by 2012 it was the only one software around to perform slow motion tracking of line. It smooth lines. A little , subtle amount of this slow-mo tracking in a brush can make the difference.
Also , by this time, the rendering of Krita was blury when zoom out. In Mypaint it was crisppy. Good luck for your researches.

Ah c'est bon ça! Ça te va bien ce lineart tout fin.... Ça a un coté bien plus précis que toutes les peintures que tu montres habituellement...

Love it. The expression is priceless, although she doesn't seem to be looking at the tutle, suggesting that something else surprised her... mystery! Nice linework and color palette though

Really great work !
The aliasing is a little bit disturbing (which probably comes to MyPaint) but I really like this painting style.

Thx, about the aliasing I had a real issue ; the exported version come from Gimp 2.8 ; I used this one because the resize and export via Krita and Mypaint were worst. Next time I should consider probably a screenshot version. While zoom out , those crispy lines are way smoother . I guess Gimp have a sharpening filter after doing a resize down. Or I may try imagemagick too. Thx for the feedback ; I'll bring care to this point on next ones.

That Really awesome ~Deevad. I was wondering what your thought on how the mypaint(dev) is going. So far I'm liking all the new features that are being introduce.

Thanks :)
Mypaint developement knew bigs refactorings last month ; the core, the GUI, the way brush are saved ; all were 'rewritten' . I'm not a developper, but I think they did all this to follow newest technology and have probably easier portage in the future to other OS , as Win or Mac.
For user side, the main new feature is straight lines / Circles / Curve , and the new Color dialog with Gamut mask support and palette compatible with Gimp. Also something new and brillant is the way Mypaint now don't round already made artwork to 16px ; he is able to respect file size.
Here is all news. I hope a new release will be up soon ; but for the moment, I think the GUI needs a bit of love.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on that. I've heard that they are rewriting it into GEGL, which is design to take advantage of your GPU card. This is something that I've been looking forward to. Plus loving how it respects done artworks file size. ^^

With GUI, it really dose need a bit love indeed. I like the top bar tool bar cause I own a tabletPC, but with the recent update, it really feels cluttered to me. If they would make it modular; be able to move parts of the toolbar round the out edge like to the top, bottom, and left side; then that would make the GUI feel less cluttered, but still retain it's simple like GUI.

But overall it has become a great tool for the average artist like me to just dive in and get something drawings done.

Hehe, a good expression. It doesn't radiate pure surprise to me, more of a surprise mixed with 'eeew', like what she is seeing is somehow weird or gross.

Something which strikes me is that with airs that long, you are missing an opportunity by not letting them be part of the expression. Having the ears angle upwards would enhance the expression even further, is my guess.

Oh thanks for the tips ; it sound dumb from me, but I really didn't thought to involve hears in the expression. I keep the tips and I will experiment with.
Also yes, for expression ; I still blend accidentally few interpretations of them and it's not good to communicate 'clearly' a message. I need to work more on to get eyes and mouth conveying the same intent of expression to make the narrative reading obvious and fluent for the reader.
Thanks again for the feedback !

Regardless of the intended expression, there is not denying the fact that she is very, very cute. :D

Wow, a lovely piece. Pretty shadows and light on her body and hair. You perfectly captured her expression on her face.
