Chaos and Evolution - 1h30 of open tutorials

Journal Entry: Fri May 31, 2013, 2:04 AM

On my recent 'move cleaning' , I decided to release my full Chaos&Evolutions DVD to the public for free on Youtube. So, to not post every chapter separated, I remixed all the main lessons into a 1h30 epic-to-render HD video ( in Kdenlive ). I also did cut, merge, etc...  The tool used ( Gimp-painter 2.6 ) on the video is outdated , but the core course is still ok and the DVD wasn't about the tool anyway. Any digital painting software ( Krita, Mypaint, SAI, Photoshop , etc... )  should work for it. Those basic and simple lessons will feet beginners in research of more self discipline and a structured workflow about the act of painting using layers and digital tools as a global concept.  For more advanced user ; the content might be too simplistic and I'm ready to receive rants about it too. Maybe one day I'll do a Chaos&Evolutions˛ for advanced hard-core technics and skill , but only when my technic will be more more advanced, I still work on it   >:-)

More infos, full dynamic menu on the video description ( under the video )  on the Youtube video page youtu.be/WOcvarqm4G0 . Feel free to share and comment.
Thanks to all who purchased by the past the real DVD & thanks for watching ( and obviously , thx Youtube for hosting this 1h30 HD file ).

Hey! I love all your artworks! I notice that you use open-source digital art programs and you look like you really know your way around these programs (specifically GIMP, MyPaint and Krita). I'm having a little trouble dealing with them so is it alright if I ask some advice? Like how to change the cursor, how to get the blur/smear tools and how to get... the eraser....?Meow :3

Hey, have a look on my website www.davidrevoy.com , I have a 'tutorial' part with some basics for Krita.
For more specific infos, I invite you to ask them on the Krita forum ; you'll probably get your answer faster from the community or find question similar to yours about the basics of Krita.
( Note: Eraser is considered as an 'ink' type  ( blending mode ) , that way every paint tool can erase , a shortcut is on the toolbar , or 'E' key while painting , for blur/smudging there is presets and brush engine for this )

Oh, thanks for the comment ; "Fairy nut" ( www.davidrevoy.com/article/205… ) is almost 8 years old. A bit too old for a repost now. I should do a remix , maybe  :-)  If you need an artwork for your grumpy fae novel, feel free to use this one, I allow it for non-commercial usage.

Thank you! I absolutely adore her, she is just so right for my character! I will use it on my Booksie site but will have to have a good think about a cover when I publish the novel, I think something along the lines of your grumpy fae would be great :)

I've seen your website while browsing for basic tutorials how to use gimp (I just downloaded the software recently) and realized that you also have a DA Account so I decided to stop by. I'm actually a newbie when it comes to digital art but I want to learn soon and improve. I just find all digital artworks fascinating, remarkable and pretty challenging. It somewhat excites me. Although I know it'll take a lot of time, practice, and effort. After all, I still need to practice and improve my drawing beforehand.
By the way, your artworks are truly amazing and inspiring. I love all your fantasy illustrations, they are all beautiful and very well done. I also like your L'heritage en Colour Graphic Novel. Even though there are no texts I could easily understand the whole story through the characters' expressions and color.

Hey i commented on your speedpaint video of Kyntia the other day, dropped in to say hi since I just so happen to have a DA acount too, I was reading your arcticle about open source by choice (understand you so well. Even if internet is encouraging piracy, working professionally on pirated software is like wrapping a noose around your own neck, you can get away with piracy even if it's illegal when you're not a pro, but I learned from a teacher in school that if he's ever competing with another professional in the same profession for a job, he actually stalks him to discover if the software he uses is licensed, meaning if you run into someone like that on pirated software, and you've earned money from that pirated software you can get into big trouble.)

But i noticed you said you worked as an art director on the Sintel project, my little brother is getting into blender and he soved me that same sintel short movie, i loved it to pieces, both the story and the art. :O

What a coincidence to bump into you like this while I was trying to get to know MyPaint, and i was trying to get to know MyPaint because i needed cross platform software, i.e. something that works with linux & windows. Lately i've found myself boycotting everything that doesn't have Linux support, but i don't necessarily want it to be free, i just want it to be available for the operating system i like the most.

I agree very much with your article, it was an interesting read. And remember, most hardware actually works with linux, it's just a question of how well it works and how much effort you need to make to make it work like you want it to. (I wanted my logitech gaming keyboard to work so badly that i spent a week rewriting drivers until eventually i managed to hardcode it to the functionality i wanted, that's the beauty of open-source. You couldn't do that on hardware that's designed for linux with no official windows drivers on windows.)

Thanks for the nice words about Sintel and your detailed reply :)
Good luck for your brother on Blender, it's a fantastic software.

Hello David, I LOVE YOUR ART! Not just for your tremedous drawings but also because you use Linux and software like MyPaint and Gimp. I was afraid there is no person who's not soaked up with this...photoshop. I'm glad I got to know a great artist who doesn't use that software on Windows <3
